Thinking inside and outside the box

In 2020, we are proud to have helped launch several brilliant start-up businesses. One of our absolute favourites which still makes us ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ is OohBox. The beauty of this brand is that it feels so right in this moment in time. Everyone needs a little luxury, to let people know they’re being thought about and why not send it through the post.

When the world seemingly came to a halt in 2020, Julie, the brainpower and entrepreneurial know-how behind OohBox was thinking of solutions. Her mind was set solely on gifting, as we all love to give a gift to let someone know how much we care. Yet we couldn’t hand over gifts as we found ourselves locked up at home, abiding by the rules of lockdown and social distancing.

We interviewed Julie to find out why she decided on the giftbox sector, what the brands plans are for 2021 and lots of other great industry advice. So, let’s take a peek inside the box.

What influenced you to start a new company in 2020?

As the pandemic started to take hold, it became apparent that things were going to change dramatically. Online shopping was already taking a substantial chunk of the market and so this was the only sensible option for a new business. With the High Street on lockdown, shoppers were unable to ‘shop around’. So, we wanted to offer a ‘shop’ that had already done the legwork.

We love the name by the way, but what made you choose OohBox?

Oh wow! We went through lots of different names before we settled on OohBox. We wanted something that felt friendly and memorable. We understood our brand’s USP and what we wanted to provide and that was beautiful, bespoke gift boxes that make you say “ooh”!

So, looking forward, what are your plans for 2021?

2021 is going to be exciting. As a new business, this year is all about gaining more insight into what our customers want. Their feedback is going to be essential for us to fine-tune our gift boxes. We will expand what really works and look at making it bigger, better, and adding a little extra, ‘ooh’.

The giftbox sector is becoming extremely competitive, what is it that makes you stand out?

Our aim is to provide an experience as well as a gift box. Although there is a lot of competition, not many of the business in the sector curate specially chosen branded products into one box. Our selection is growing which means we can cover more demographics. Oh, and our boxes are sold at less than the retail of the products in the box, meaning the gift wrapping and the personalised embossed card are free added extras. When I came up with the idea, it was partly due to the time taken to find all the items and then all the extra delivery costs. With OohBox, there’s one delivery cost, no time wasted searching high and low for those hard-to-get products and we can deliver direct to your loved ones. It’s a winning solution.

What was your experience with the gift box sector before you started OohBox?

I was looking for a special gift for my friend and was struggling to find what I wanted and realised that I couldn’t be the only one. There are lots of sites and marketplaces out there but many of them offer much of the same and very few that have a gift box selection. Time is precious and I would have been happy to pay for someone else to do the thinking and organisation for me, especially when most of the time I’m on the last minute!

Finally, what would you say makes a good gift box?

A good gift box, in my opinion, contains quality products, things that you would buy as stand-alone treats. It should be beautifully packaged in such a way that it can be handed straight to the recipient. A good gift box, when opened, should make the recipient say “Ooh”!

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out all the brilliant options OohBox have to offer. As they are a growing start-up brand, Julie is always listening to new ideas and fresh ways of innovating. So, if what you’re looking for isn’t on offer, let her or us know. We will be happy to pass on the message.
